What Is An ERCP?
An endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a specialized procedure used by our team at Tayeb Gastroenterology & Associates to evaluate and treat conditions affecting the bile ducts, pancreatic ducts, and upper digestive tract. During the exam, a thin, flexible tube with a light and camera is inserted through the mouth and gently guided into the duodenum, the first part of the small intestine, allowing your provider to access and assess the bile and pancreatic duct openings. An ERCP procedure may be recommended to help diagnose or manage symptoms, such as abdominal pain, pancreatitis, abnormal liver tests, or unusual imaging results. If you've been experiencing these concerns, contact our practice in Rochester Hills, MI to schedule a consultation and learn more about how an ERCP may help.
How Is An ERCP Performed?
For your ERCP, you'll be asked to arrive about an hour early to complete paperwork and prepare for the procedure. After changing into a gown and having an IV placed for sedation or general anesthesia, you'll lie on your abdomen as the endoscope is gently guided through your mouth into the esophagus, stomach, and small intestine to access the bile and pancreatic ducts. Air and contrast dye are introduced to enhance visibility, and x-ray imaging is used to identify blockages, stones, or narrowing. Depending on the findings, your Tayeb Gastroenterology & Associates provider may take biopsies, perform a sphincterotomy, remove stones, or place stents during the exam, typically lasting 30 – 90 minutes. After the procedure, you'll recover under observation while the sedation wears off, and most patients are ready for discharge within an hour, though you'll need a ride home and should rest for the remainder of the day.
What Are the Benefits of An ERCP?
An ERCP may be recommended by one of our Rochester Hills, MI GI providers if a patient presents with abnormal liver function tests, unexplained abdominal pain, jaundice, or signs of pancreatic inflammation. This advanced procedure offers several key benefits, including:
- Faster recovery times: ERCP is minimally invasive compared to traditional surgical options.
- Streamlined care: Many conditions can be diagnosed and treated during the same procedure, reducing the need for follow-up appointments and shortening overall treatment time.
- Dual-purpose functionality: ERCP is both diagnostic and therapeutic, allowing your physician to identify issues and provide immediate intervention, such as stone removal or stent placement.
- High precision: The technique offers a clear, targeted view of the pancreatic and biliary ducts, which enhances accuracy in both diagnosis and treatment planning.
