What Is An EGD?
An esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) is a minimally invasive procedure used at Tayeb Gastroenterology & Associates to examine the upper digestive tract with a thin, flexible tube that has a light and camera attached. The scope is carefully guided through the mouth and into the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum, the first part of the small intestine, to evaluate the lining for signs of irritation, damage, or disease. An EGD may be recommended to help diagnose a range of gastrointestinal concerns, including abdominal pain, chronic heartburn or reflux, difficulty swallowing, unexplained bleeding, or abnormal imaging results. It can also be used to monitor long-term reflux symptoms for early signs of esophageal cancer. If you've been advised to have an EGD or are experiencing ongoing digestive issues, contact our practice in Rochester Hills, MI to schedule a consultation with a GI provider.
How Is An EGD Performed?
At Tayeb Gastroenterology & Associates, patients are asked to arrive about an hour before their EGD to complete paperwork and prepare for the procedure. After changing into a medical gown, an IV will be placed to administer sedation and monitoring equipment will be used to track vital signs throughout the exam. During the EGD procedure, patients lie on their left side while a sedated endoscopy is performed using a thin, flexible scope inserted through the mouth and carefully guided through the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. Air is introduced to expand the GI tract for better visibility, and any remaining fluid is suctioned out. Depending on what's found, your provider may take biopsies, remove polyps, or treat bleeding. The exam typically lasts 10 – 20 minutes, after which patients are moved to recovery to be monitored as the sedation wears off.
What Are the Benefits of An EGD?
An esophagogastroduodenoscopy offers several important benefits for patients with upper digestive concerns. This procedure allows our Rochester Hills, MI gastroenterology team to directly view the inner lining of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. Additional advantages of undergoing an EGD include:
- Allows for tissue biopsies, polyp removal, and minor treatments during the procedure
- Helps identify the cause of symptoms, like heartburn, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain
- Assists in diagnosing a range of gastrointestinal conditions, such as GI infections, celiac disease, Crohn's disease, GERD, and more
- Generally considered a safe, quick, and effective diagnostic tool
